The Oscar award-winning Indian costume designer, Bhanu Athaiya left for her heavenly abode on Thursday morning at the age of 91 after suffering from mild fever and cough. While the entire film fraternity continues to mourn the loss of the legendary designer, popular celebrity designer, Manish Malhotra spoke to ETimes exclusively and said, “I have been a huge fan of Bhanu ji ‘ s work. I really looked up to her, be it Vyjantimala‘s look in ‘Amrapali’ that became so famous or the orange fit saree of Mumtaz in ‘Brahmachari’ or Dev Anand‘s ‘Guide’ or the Raj Kapoor banner films and then right upto ‘Gandhi’, she has been an integral part of some of the most iconic films. Her work has been iconic and she is going to be remembered for her work in movies and some very memorable movies she designed for.”

Reminiscing interactions with Athaiya, he revealed, “I met her when I was shopping for ‘Dil Toh Pàagal Hai’ at a fabric store I went upto her and told her I am Manish and I am working with Yash Chopra and he speaks very fondly of you. After that, during a fashion show for the celebration of 100 years of cinema, I invited Asha Bhosale, Hema Malini, Priyanka Chopra, and Bhanu Athaiya. She had very sweetly accepted by invitation and said she will definitely come for me and even walked the ramp for me. I have very fond memories of that day.”

He further added, “I think I identified with her because we both loved clothes and movies and her work was so admirable. We recently lost Saroj Khan and now Bhanu ji, I think the film industry has lost a very good technician whose work is going to be remembered as iconic.”
